GAVI CEO Commends Ghana’s Malaria Vaccine Success During Central Region Visit

The Chief Executive Officer of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), Dr. Sania Nishtar, has praised Ghana for its progress in malaria prevention, particularly in the successful rollout of the four-dose malaria vaccine for children.

During a visit to the St. Gregory Catholic Hospital and the Nyanyano Community Health Centre in the Central Region, Dr. Nishtar highlighted Ghana’s achievement of 80% coverage for the third dose of the vaccine as a model for other African countries. She attributed this success to strong leadership from the Ministry of Health, the dedication of frontline health workers, and active community involvement.

She acknowledged the difficult conditions under which many health workers operate, including service to displaced populations and working in hard-to-reach areas. Dr. Nishtar reaffirmed GAVI’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s health priorities, emphasizing that international organizations are in Africa to serve, not dictate.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Health, Dr. Hafiz Adams thanked GAVI for the recognition and reaffirmed Ghana’s resolve to eliminate malaria, especially among children. He also commended health professionals and community stakeholders for their tireless contributions to improving health outcomes.

Dr. Nishtar was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Health, the National Malaria Control Program, the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, and local community leaders.
